A.Prof Ian Vela
A/Prof Vela is one of Australia’s leading Urologic Oncologists with specific interests in the areas of Bladder and Prostate Cancer. He leads research teams at Queensland University of Technology and is principle investigator on multiple clinical trials in both areas. A/Prof Vela specializes in the surgical and medical management of Urologic cancers from early to advanced, as well as general urologic conditions.
A/Prof Vela completed his medical training through the University of Queensland and went on to complete his Urological training in various SEQ hospitals. During his Urological training, A/Prof Vela also completed a PhD focusing on factors involved in Metastatic Prostate Cancer. Following his training, he was selected to a two-year Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) accredited Fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York City. This fellowship provided extensive training in robotic, laparoscopic and open surgical techniques for the treatment of urologic cancers. On completion of his overseas fellowship, he returned to his hometown of Brisbane and has continued his clinical and research work through the Princess Alexandra Hospital as a senior staff surgeon and the Queensland University of Technology where he is a Group Leader and Private Practice at Greenslopes Private Hospital and Mater Redlands Hospital.
